THE EMERITUS HIKING GROUP

This informal group was started by Barbara West and has continued with many organizers and leaders.  We act independently in terms of any University responsibility or liability for our actions.  Our goal is to exercise and fraternize each Monday morning.  Some hikes are urban, flat, easy, others gentle to moderate and occasionally more strenuous. Mileage is usually 3-6 miles and 500-2000 feet elevation.  We take advantage of member’s knowledge about plants, birds, photography, GPS tricks, smart watches, and rocks!

Our weekly hikes span the area from Bountiful to American Fork and we usually offer a carpool location and directions to the trailhead. We encourage members to suggest new hikes and volunteer to lead as the organizer is often out of town enjoying her retirement. Notices usually go out Thursday of the preceding week.  Adjustments or cancellation due to weather conditions are announced by 8:00 a.m. on the day of the hike.

Each year there is a M-F “camping “trip within a 6 hr radius of Salt Lake City. The group stays in motels, tents, cabins, trailers, vans and RVs, but have options for hikes, tours, birding, meals, scenic drives or just reading in your easy chair. We welcome additions to our group.  All communications are by email. Those who want to be on the list send name, address, cell and land line numbers, email, and previous academic departmental affiliation to Suzanne Stansaas.

"THE GRANDPARENTS ARE IN" ADVICE GROUP

All emeriti are invited to join this generation-bridging activity. We table in areas with active student traffic (the Union, Kahlert Dorm, the School of Business, and as invited to major student events.)

Our motto is:

“THE GRANDPARENTS ARE IN GIVING ADVICE”

“THE ADVICE MAY BE BAD, BUT AT LEAST IT IS FREE!”

In actuality, we spend about two hours in groups of 3-4 talking with any students who are interested-and there is no shortage of them. We do give advice, which they seem to appreciate, but we also cheer them on, suggest resources that might be helpful, and just enjoy the opportunity to support these remarkable young people.  More often than not, we find that their concerns/values resonate well with ours and we share an enthusiasm for the educational process and the creativity exhibited in dealing with the complex world we all face. We generally feel energized by the students, and they appreciate the support we provide them.

If you are interested in joining, contact Ken Jameson, who can add you to the mail list for signups. He can also answers questions, as can Ryck Luthi or Glade Ellingson.
